How To Hide Silver From Metal Detectors?

Ever marveled at a metal detector’s ability to find hidden treasures? But, can these fascinating devices detect a diamond? Let’s delve into the science behind it.

How To Hide Silver From Metal Detectors

Every metal detector including myself knows how to detect metal and how to find them accurately. But I wondered if there’s a possibility of hiding precious metals like silver from a metal detector.

This came to my mind after hearing an incident. One of my neighbor’s houses got robbed recently.

But they were amazed because everything was tidy and none of the objects were moved except for the cupboard door and the drawer.

Finally, the curiosity was solved as the thieves were caught while robbing another house. And guess what?. They had metal detectors on hand!

The thieves nowadays are very smart. They know how to do things quickly. So we should be smarter. So, I did research to find ways to hide silver items from detectors.

Here’s what I learned about, how to hide silver from metal detectors?

To hide silver from metal detectors, bury it deep underground, use non-magnetic containers or shields, store it in a secure safe, or hide it in unconventional places like a refrigerator. Non-conductive materials like rubber, plastic, wood, or glass can block detector signals.

I have some cool ideas on other things that can be done to save the silver from detection. I’ll explore those methods in deep.

Furthermore, I’ll answer some frequently asked questions as well.

Let’s jump in!

Do Metal Detectors Detect Silver?

Yes, Metal detectors are able to efficiently detect silver. Silver itself is highly conductive. Therefore it is easy for metal detectors to identify silver easily.

Since the conductivity of silver is high compared to other metals, a low frequency should be used to detect it.

Low-frequency detectors have long wavelengths that are able to detect on deeper grounds as they are able to penetrate the soil.

How To Hide Silver From Metal Detectors?

Before I start this part, I highly recommend you not to try these methods to sneak silver or any other metals in large quantities through the airports or any other sites with security inspections.

Movement of these items in large quantities is not allowed. Only the people who are doing business or others with special permission can bring them.

But before that, even they have to do payments to get licenses

If someone brings them illegally or tries to sneak them out of the place, legal actions will be taken against them.

Okay so let’s get back to our topic. I’m explaining these methods here for you so that you’ll be able to safeguard everything silver and precious from thieves.

Here’re several methods that you can use to hide silver from getting detected,

  • Bury under the ground
  • Use non-magnetic containers
  • Use a non-magnetic metal shield
  • Store in a safe
  • Hide in a refrigerator

Let’s look into them a bit more.

Bury Under The Ground

This is so far the easiest thing to do. There are still treasures around the world that are buried and not found yet.

Thieves for a fact, don’t spend much money on buying a high-end metal detector. Most of them have detectors that could be searched up to 15 inches from the surface.

So if you’re planning to bury the silver underground, keep at least a depth of 4 feet. It will be hard to detect when it is in the deep.

Also, just in case you are still worried, place an object that is made from a different metal above one feet from the silver that is buried.

Make sure that it has quite a high magnetic field. This will fake the detector and the silver will be safe.

Use Non-Magnetic Containers

Non-magnetic materials such as plastic, constrained layer damping, and mumetal have the ability to block metal detectors.

They cannot produce an electromagnetic field. So they are unable to disturb and signal the magnetic field of the metal detector.

A container made from these materials can be used to keep the silver safe.

Since the silver is covered by these materials, there is no possibility for the detector to reach out underneath and detect the conductivity of silver.

Use A Non-Magnetic Metal Shield

Metals like lead, copper, and aluminum have a very low magnetic field. These are able to block or weaken the detectors.

Lead is a soft metal and therefore it is used to make paints.

These paints can be used as a shield to cover the silver and it won’t be able to be detected by a metal detector.

Aluminum can also be used to cover silver objects. But aluminum can set off metal detectors

It won’t be a huge problem since the metal detector will identify the object as aluminum as the silver is covered with it. The same concept applies to copper.

Store In A Safe

Well, this might not be something interesting. But it is so far the safest option to have.

Safety boxes actually don’t block a metal detector from setting off. Instead, it will be very hard for someone to open it up.

In case if someone knows your password, they can break the safe.

So if you want to keep the silver safe in a safety box without letting anyone snatch it, you will have to spend a little more on investing in an advanced safety box.

If you can purchase a heavy and hard-to-carry safe, the thieves are not able to carry it out of the house and drill it.

And some safety boxes have a double password facility, that keeps the safe locked twice.

There are so many high-end safety boxes with advanced security options.

Make sure that you rarely tell anyone that you’re having a safety box at home. And also do a thorough inspection of the company that you’re planning to buy your safety box from.

Hide In A Refrigerator

This might feel a little awkward but if you really want your silver to be hidden from that thief’s detector, it’s a fantastic idea!

No one is going to ever think that a freezer is having something precious in it. It will be almost neglected by someone who is going to rob the place.

And no one would ever imagine putting a metal detector inside a fridge to find something valuable.

And there’s another benefit that you’ll get by freezing silver. The cold itself has some preservative properties.

It can keep the metal as new. So you’ll get a hiding and a preservative space at once. How cool!.

Tips For Hiding Silver From Metal Detectors

I did some experiments by myself since I was curious about how to hide silver from getting detected.

And here are some tips to follow to hide silver from metal detectors,

  1. Use non-ferrous metals like aluminum, copper and brass to hide and cover up silver from detectors. Detectors are basically calibrated to identify ferrous metals. Except for some high-end detectors, most of the detectors don’t have the ability to detect ferrous metals.
  2. If silver is placed inside raw materials such as wood or stone, it is rarely detectable. But the silver should not be piled in one place. It should be evenly distributed to avoid detection.
  3. False detection can be set up by scattering small objects such as jewelry, coins, and nails that are made out of different metals. The metal detector will pick the signals coming from these metals and this will mask the presence of silver.
  4. Plastic and rubber are materials that are not conductive or electromagnetic. So these can reduce the chances of getting detected. These items have the ability to block the signals from detectors.

What Materials Block The Silver Detector Sensors?

There are some materials that have the ability to block the signals of silver detectors. These are mostly non-conductive.

Rubber

Rubber can cover silver from metal detectors. It is insulated and has the ability to block electromagnetic waves.

Plastic

Plastic-based objects such as PVS can block the metal detectors

Wood

Silver can be hidden within wood-based material. Wood is very natural and it is also an insulator.

It can block electromagnetic signals. This is an effective way to improve home.

Glass

Glass is a cheap material. It is also a good conductor. Therefore it is able to block detection signals easily.

That’s it folks! Now you know how to hide silver from metal detectors and protect your silver valuables from any kind of threat.

In this article, I’ve deeply discussed how to hide silver from metal detectors with the best methods possible. I’ve indicated the pros and cons of each method and what materials you can use to block signals from metal detectors.

The best way to hide silver from metal detectors is to bury it under the ground. Pick a place where metal is usually not detected. Then dig a pit to a quite large depth and bury the silver. The further the depth, the harder it can be found.
