Virginia is overall a great state when it comes to metal detecting. It has a great history and the land is rich in gold and hidden treasures. 

The weather is also great here and comfortable for any metal detectorist. 

I came across articles and reports on different findings from around the state including jewelry, coins, war artifacts, and even gold nuggets. 

So I visited the Northern part of Virginia. I was keen on metal detecting on beaches and was able to find lots of treasures.

So I will give you a brief idea on what are the best beaches in Northern Virginia that you can metal detect and get positive results.

1. Chesapeake Beach

This is a little beach that is also often called the Chic’s beach by people. 

This is located in a residential area on each side of the Chesapeake Bay tunnel located in Virginia Beach. 

This is an area that gives opportunities to do fishing, swimming, camping, dolphin watching, and many more activities. 

This is also a busy area surrounded by restaurants that have outdoor dining facilities. 

The sandy areas along the beach are the best-recommended place to metal detect at this place. 

Chesapeake Beach is one of my favorite places in Virginia to metal detect.

2. Colonial Beach

This beach is located on the northern neck peninsula which is on the tip of Northern Virginia. This beach area has a river and beach-based community.

The colonial beach developed in the 19th century where it was popular as a place ideal for bathing and fishing. 

Most of the people here also used water to travel before inventing the vehicles.

So this beach has a lot of history and offers a lot of opportunities for metal detectorists. You will be able to find a lot of colonial coins and artifacts if you search this area.

3. Virginia Beach

This is the longest beach and it also holds a Guinness record. It is a 35-mile-long coastline that has a lot of space. 

The beach area gives opportunities to camp, fish, swim, and spend time relaxing.

There is a small space along the beach where it is filled with restaurants and a lot of people. So this area might have a lot of dropped items to detect. 

You will be able to detect coins, jewelry, and other metal objects. But certainly not artifacts.

4. Ocean City Beach

This beautiful beach with white sand and hotels, stores, and restaurants along it. It is located in Maryland. The beach area offers space to surf, kite fly, and swim.

The beach is also filled with arcade games and even a mini golf space. 

And guess what?. It has a go-kart track, an amusement park, and even nightclubs!

The beach is also busy with kayaks and other tour boats. This is because people travel to the famous Assateague island from here.

It’s a 32-acre park located on a peninsula that faces Aquia Creek in the Potomac River. The park is located in Fairfax County in Stafford.

It is a great place to hunt for lost jewelry, coins, and other metal objects. But you will have to ask the management of the park in order to dig in the objects. 

6. Bethany Beach

This beach is actually located in Delaware. But anyone who is in Northern Virginia can enjoy this place. It takes around 3 hours to drive to this beach from Northern Virginia. 

There are cute boutique shops and small restaurants along the boardwalk that can be strolled along. It also has a nature center and a miniature golf course. 

All these facilities make it a better beach destination to visit. Since it is a busy location, you will be able to detect coins and jewelry. 

The place can be detected without any doubt as Virginia allows detecting of public places without any historical evidence. 

7. North End Beach

This beach is located around 147 km away from the central part of Virginia close to Northern Virginia. This beach is located in an urban area.

So it is important to research these and familiarize yourself with these rules and regulations.

It is strictly prohibited to keep an object that is historically valuable and is more than 100 years old. You can be fined and sometimes even jailed.
