So can you imagine the pleasure when I got to know the places where I could potentially metal detect for gold?

Each location offers unique opportunities, but success requires research, appropriate equipment, and an understanding of local regulations.

1. Beaches

Beaches can be surprisingly productive locations for finding gold, especially those located near regions with historical or ongoing gold mining activities. 

Gold found at the beach is also placer gold, similar to what is found in rivers and streams.

Here are some pointers for finding gold on beaches:

• Gold-Bearing Beaches: Beaches close to rivers carrying gold deposits can have gold, particularly after storms which can wash gold into the sea where it’s subsequently deposited on the beach. Similarly, beaches near old gold mining districts can also have gold deposits.
• Black Sand Deposits: Like in rivers and streams, gold can often be found associated with black sand deposits on beaches. These are concentrations of heavier minerals including gold, magnetite, and garnet. Black sand is a good indicator that gold might be present.
• Low Tide & Storm Events: Searching during low tide can be beneficial as more beach surface is exposed. After large storm events is another prime time to search as gold may have been washed up from the sea floor or from nearby cliffs and river outlets.
• Pay Attention to Layers: In some cases, the gold layer could be a foot or more below the surface, not in the loose sand on top. If you’re serious about beach hunting, you might need a long-handled shovel or sand scoop.

Gold in rivers and streams is called placer gold and comes from upstream sources. 

Gold is very dense, about 19 times denser than water, so it can be transported by water currents until the current slows down enough for the gold to settle. 

This usually happens on the inside of bends in the river, where the water flow is slower, or where there is a sudden decrease in gradient like in the downstream part of rapids or waterfalls.

Being from a state near Washington and the fact there might be gold in the state made me drive my car and travel to Washington in search of gold. 

Swauk Creek

Swauk Creek is located near the Cascade Mountains in Washington. This region of the state has rich gold mining history to it as well. 

So there could be potential gold pieces that could be buried underground for you to discover. 

Columbia River

The great Columbia River runs through the state of Washington. This river has yielded tons of gold over many centuries and it still does. 

So this is another great location in the state of Washington for you to try. 

Liberty Town

Liberty town is a rural town located in Kittitas County, interesting feature of this town is, that it was a gold mine back in the early 100s. 

So there is a good chance that you can find some hidden gold in these areas. 

2. South Dakota 

Known for the famous Mount Rushmore, this state has more than just craved rock statues to it. This is one of the few states where you can find a large number of abandoned gold mines in it.

Deadwood and Lead Towns

Virginia City

This is a township located in Storey County. Virginia city achieved its prime mining years during the Comstock Lode Gold Rush. 

Now it is preserved and visitors and enthusiasts can visit this town and engage in metal detecting. 

7. Arizona 

The state which is mostly known for its scenic beautiful natural creations lies the Grand Canyon, also has some other natural creations hidden under the ground waiting for the perfect opportunity to be uncovered.

1. California

Among the many counties resent in California few caught the eye of me for gold treasures.

Sierra Nevada Foothills

This region is world-famous for its gold deposits some of the hotspots among the Sierra Nevada foothills are Placer County, Eldorado County, and Nevada County, and rivers such as the American River, Tuolumne River, Yuba River, and Feather River which flow through these regions also have yielded gold over the years.

Apart from these hotspots, Grass Valley town which is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills is an old mining town. 

Even today you can see the remaining of this town. These regions might give good value for your metal detecting time spent.

Kern County

The Kern River which runs through Kern County has been a gold prospecting hotspot over the years most metal detecting enthusiasts have claimed that they have found gold nuggets by detecting through the river bans and shallow water areas.
